Comparison: Acura MDX vs. Acura RDX

February 23rd, 2021

The sophisticated driver in search of a luxury SUV will find what they are looking for with Acura. Featuring the latest in performance, technology and more, the Acura MDX and Acura RDX are premium vehicles designed with exceptional capabilities, inside and out.

Prospective owners often ask about the similarities and differences between the two models. With so many available options on both vehicles, the answer is complex. However, the comparison can easily be broken down by considering the following questions when learning about each vehicle.

  1. What kind of driving experience do I desire?
  2. What are my performance needs as a luxury vehicle owner?
  3. What kind of comfortability and connectivity am I looking for?

With those questions in mind, let’s take a look at some of the key components that make up both the MDX and RDX. For personalized assistance when choosing your next vehicle, work with a professional Acura dealership.

Premium SUVs to Meet Different Needs

No matter the model you decide on, Acura ensures that no detail is left untouched during the sculpting of these high-quality SUVs.

The most noticeable difference is the type of driving experience each offers. The all-new 2022 Acura MDX is a premium performance SUV with third-row seating and exceptional power capabilities, among others. Those seeking a vehicle that fits a more adventurous lifestyle may consider the 2021 Acura RDX, a premium sport crossover with split-second control and handling, breathtaking panoramic views and many additional attributes.

It’s clear that while each vehicle offers variety, both the MDX and RDX rise to the top as exceptional vehicles that enhance the driving experience.

Another initial difference that may be noticed is the price point. The MDX starting price is $46,900 (MSRP, not including destination and handling fees) and the RDX, $38,400 (MSRP, not including destination and handling fees). However, every vehicle (regardless of model) is different, based on available features and packages. Price will be dependent on those measures. For example, prospective owners may find that their needs are met with a more advanced version of the RDX instead of a standard MDX, or vice versa.

Craftsmanship and Engineering Tailored to Performance

Different experiences require different designs. Motorists will see that the MDX is larger in length and width. It also needs more powerful performance characteristics like a 290-HP V-6 engine or even more power in advanced models like the Type S. This is coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, a brand-new double-wishbone front suspension and Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) for greater performance.

While the RDX is smaller and sportier, its 272-HP 2.0L VTEC TURBO engine packs plenty of punch in line with an optional Adaptive Damper System for immediate suspension response. It’s also more fuel efficient, earning on average 22 MPG in the city, 28 on the highway and 24 combined.

Owners of both vehicles can harness acceleration with available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®). Both vehicles also have the following control, safety and security features that come standard or as options:

  • AcuraWatch™
  • Driver-assistive technologies (e.g., Blind Spot Information System, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor)
  • Much More!

Generous Comfort and Precision Connectivity

Your Acura MDX or RDX will include spacious seating and storage, guaranteed.

Naturally, because of its three rows, you’ll find more seating availability in the MDX, with room for seven. There is also more storage space (95 cu. ft. with all rows folded flat) and you can even remove a reversible smart lid for larger items you may need to store.

The RDX has plenty of room as well. 60/40-split rear seats fold down for ample storage space and this luxury vehicle is almost parallel with its larger counterpart in the amount of legroom it provides.

You’ll also find the following interior elements in both models:

  • Premium leather wrapping
  • Wide variety of top-quality materials
  • Other fine details!

From a connectivity perspective, both vehicles offer state-of-the-art technology tools to enhance the driving experience.

  • Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ Integrations
  • True Touchpad Interface™
  • Acura/ELS STUDIO 3D® with 16 speakers
  • More features specific to each vehicle
